Raphinha captainers should stop here: 15 points and 30 with the armband is a clear hold. The same applies to Bruno Fernandes on 13 and Matheus Cunha on 12. For everyone else, the Wednesday decision is simple enough. Hold a captain on eight points or more unless you are deliberately chasing upside, and switch any return of six or fewer to Kylian Mbappé or Erling Haaland.
Seven is the awkward score. I would move the armband from a seven-point captain to Mbappé because Real Madrid play in the early kick-off and his start can be checked before the game locks. Eight is where I become more conservative. Lamine Yamal's eight has already banked 16 captain points, so the replacement needs nine merely to improve the outcome.
The first Wednesday fixtures, AEK Athens against Real Madrid and Fenerbahçe against Liverpool, kick off at 17:45 GMT on 4 November. Save every substitution and captain change before then.

The biggest UCL Fantasy scores from Tuesday
- Kasper Jørgensen, LASK, 22 points
- Aleksei Batrakov, Galatasaray, 17 points
- Konrad Laimer, Bayern München, 17 points
- Djed Spence, Inter, 16 points
- Fabián Ruiz, Paris Saint-Germain, 16 points
- João Neves, Paris Saint-Germain, 15 points
- Raphinha, Barcelona, 15 points
- Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United, 13 points
- Yann Bisseck, Inter, 13 points
- Calvin Verdonk, Lille, 12 points
Jørgensen was the night's outstanding Fantasy scorer. The €4.5m LASK defender scored twice, kept a clean sheet and collected the Player of the Match award in the 4-0 win over Slovan Bratislava. That is a spectacular return, but it is not a reason to build a transfer plan around a defender repeating two goals.
The more useful pattern is how many defenders found several routes to points. Laimer combined a goal, a Bayern clean sheet, six recoveries and Player of the Match. Spence supplied two assists, an Inter clean sheet and the same bonus. Verdonk reached 12 through Lille's clean sheet, nine recoveries and Player of the Match. Recovery volume continues to turn a good defensive return into an excellent one.
Raphinha gives his captainers the perfect answer
Barcelona 3-0 Aston Villa
Raphinha scored twice, earned Player of the Match and finished on 15 points despite playing only 70 minutes. At €9.5m and 39 per cent ownership, he was the most damaging popular Tuesday captain for non-owners.
Lamine Yamal also scored and returned eight points. That is not a failure. The difference between eight and Raphinha's 15 is large enough to feel painful, but the correct Wednesday decision should be based on the eight already secured, not the score another player happened to post.
Yamal captainers have 16 points banked. I would usually hold. Switching to Mbappé or Haaland has a real ceiling, but it also turns a guaranteed return into a bet that needs nine points just to win by one. Managers protecting a good rank should keep. Managers chasing a large deficit can justify the gamble.
Paris spread the points in a six-goal rout
Villarreal 0-6 Paris Saint-Germain
Fabián Ruiz scored twice and collected Player of the Match for 16 points. João Neves reached 15 with a goal, two assists and five recoveries, while Willian Pacho returned 11 and Désiré Doué scored nine.
Paris are a warning against assuming the most obvious attacker must own the haul. Their six goals were shared across several players, and the strongest Fantasy scores came from midfielders with extra routes through assists, recoveries and bonuses.
Doué's nine is a hold if captained. It gives 18 points and leaves a Wednesday replacement needing ten to improve the total. His owners should not let a 6-0 scoreline make a good individual return feel inadequate.
Bayern and Inter reward defensive routes
Atlético de Madrid 0-2 Bayern München
Laimer's 17 was built from Bayern's clean sheet, a goal, six recoveries and Player of the Match. Dayot Upamecano scored eight, while Alphonso Davies returned seven. Harry Kane assisted Laimer and finished on five points.
Kane captainers should switch. Five becomes ten with the armband, but Mbappé or Haaland only needs six to improve it. There is no need to protect a mid-range return when two premium Wednesday forwards are available.
Feyenoord 0-3 Inter
Spence scored 16 after two assists, a clean sheet and Player of the Match. Yann Bisseck added a goal for 13, while Piotr Zieliński scored ten. Inter's defenders once again showed why attacking involvement can transform an otherwise standard clean-sheet score.
Manchester United turn the game around
Manchester United 3-2 Roma
Bruno Fernandes scored 13 through a goal, an assist, three recoveries and Player of the Match. That is an automatic captain hold.
Matheus Cunha scored twice and finished on 12 despite a stoppage-time red card. Captainers should hold the 24 points. Owners must also leave him in their final XI because a player sent off cannot be removed by a manual substitution.
The red card matters more for future planning than it does for Wednesday. Do not turn a strong score into a bad captain decision merely because the final event was negative.
All Matchday 4 Day 1 results
- Shakhtar Donetsk 0-1 Sporting CP
- Galatasaray 2-0 Stuttgart
- Atlético de Madrid 0-2 Bayern München
- Barcelona 3-0 Aston Villa
- Feyenoord 0-3 Inter
- Bodø/Glimt 0-0 Lille
- LASK 4-0 Slovan Bratislava
- Manchester United 3-2 Roma
- Villarreal 0-6 Paris Saint-Germain
There were six clean sheets in nine matches, which explains why defenders dominate the top of the scoring list. Galatasaray's Batrakov was the main attacking exception with two goals and 17 points. Sporting won through Issa Doumbia, but Luis Suárez returned only two. Victor Osimhen also scored two for Galatasaray despite completing 90 minutes.

UCL Fantasy captain switch thresholds for Wednesday
Ten points or more: hold
Bank the return. Jørgensen, Batrakov, Laimer, Spence, Fabián, João Neves, Raphinha, Bruno, Bisseck, Verdonk and Cunha have all done enough.
Eight or nine points: usually hold
An eight-point captain has already produced 16. A new captain must score nine to improve that total. Yamal and Doué captainers should usually keep the armband, although an aggressive manager can switch to Mbappé when chasing a large gap.
Seven points: switch to Mbappé if confirmed
Seven is the true judgement call. I prefer Mbappé because Real Madrid's team sheet arrives before the 17:45 GMT lock. If he starts, his penalty role and goal ceiling justify risking the extra seven points.
Six points or fewer: switch
Kane's five and the two-point returns from Osimhen and Suárez should be attacked. Choose the strongest unplayed starter already in your squad. Do not make the decision on reputation alone.
The Captain Picks tool helps compare Wednesday options, while the UCL Fantasy substitutions and captain changes guide covers the rules behind the move.
Best Wednesday captain options ranked
1. Kylian Mbappé, Real Madrid, €11.0m
Mbappé is the best combination of role, ceiling and useful information. He is in Real Madrid's travelling squad for AEK Athens, and the 17:45 GMT kick-off means managers can wait for a confirmed team before changing the armband.
At 56 per cent ownership, he is also the safest route for managers protecting position. I would switch to him from six points or fewer, and from seven when the start is confirmed. I would not sacrifice Raphinha, Bruno or Yamal solely because Mbappé has an attractive fixture.
2. Erling Haaland, Manchester City, €11.0m
Haaland is in City's 23-man travelling squad for Leipzig. His ceiling is obvious and the official Matchday 4 captain guide places him alongside Mbappé as Wednesday's headline option.
The drawback is timing. City play at 20:00 GMT, so there is no confirmed line-up before the first matches lock. Haaland is the aggressive switch for managers comfortable accepting that uncertainty.
3. Serhou Guirassy, Borussia Dortmund, €8.5m
Guirassy has 27 Fantasy points through three matchdays and faces Real Betis at home. He offers a strong alternative when Mbappé and Haaland are not in the squad, but he should not tempt managers into abandoning a double-digit Tuesday return.
4. Gabriel, Arsenal, €6.0m
Gabriel is the defensive captain route away to Slavia Praha. Arsenal's clean-sheet potential, his set-piece threat and his recovery route give him several ways to score. The ceiling is lower than the premium forwards, but the floor is attractive for a switch from a blank.
For the wider match context, revisit the MD4 deadline guide and compare unplayed options in Expected Points.
The Wednesday substitution checklist
- Leave every double-digit Tuesday score in the XI. Do not chase an extra point with an unnecessary gamble.
- Bench zero, one and two-point players for an unplayed Wednesday player expected to start.
- Usually remove three-point players. Four is closer and depends on the replacement's starting security.
- Do not try to remove Cunha. A red-carded player cannot be manually substituted.
- Wait for the two early line-ups. AEK Athens against Real Madrid and Fenerbahçe against Liverpool provide confirmed teams before the lock.
- Check the final formation and save. Manual changes only count when the team remains valid.
The best Wednesday plan is calm. Raphinha, Bruno and Cunha captainers hold. Yamal captainers usually hold. Kane, Osimhen and Suárez captainers switch. If Mbappé starts in Athens, he is the cleanest second-night choice.
