The Savant’s Ultimate MD12 Squad — Our Best XV for R16 Leg 2

The panel’s consensus 15-man squad for Matchday 12, built around aggregate context, home advantage and the fixtures most likely to produce UCL Fantasy points. Captain strategy, budget breakdown and bench order included.

With the Matchday 12 deadline fast approaching, The Savant panel has locked in its recommended squad for the Round of 16 second legs. This isn’t a template you blindly copy — it’s a framework built on aggregate context, expected goals data, set-piece threat and home advantage across all eight ties.

Every pick has been debated. Every position justified. Here’s the squad, the reasoning, and the captain strategy to tie it all together.

📋 Formation: 3–4–3

Total squad value: ~€98.5m (comfortably within the €100m budget)
Day 1 (Tuesday): 8 players | Day 2 (Wednesday): 7 players
Captain: Gyökeres (Day 1) or Lewandowski (Day 2)

Goalkeepers

David Raya — GK — €5.5m
Arsenal | Day 1 (Tue) | vs Leverkusen (H) | Agg: 1-1
STARTING GK

Arsenal at the Emirates are a defensive fortress. The tie is level at 1-1, meaning Arteta will set up to control the game at home. Raya has kept clean sheets in three of his last four European home matches. With Leverkusen missing Flekken, Badé and several attacking options, the clean sheet probability here is among the highest of any fixture in MD12.

Why him: Best clean sheet odds of any goalkeeper this matchday. GK/DEF clean sheet = 4 points, plus save points upside.

Gianluigi Donnarumma — GK — €5.5m
PSG | Day 1 (Tue) | vs Chelsea (A) | Agg: PSG lead 5-2
BENCH GK

Your backup option. PSG lead 5-2 on aggregate and can afford to sit deep at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea will throw everything forward, creating a strange dynamic where PSG might concede but the tie is never in doubt. Donnarumma makes the bench as insurance — he won’t start over Raya unless something changes.

Defenders

William Saliba — DEF — €6.0m
Arsenal | Day 1 (Tue) | vs Leverkusen (H)
STARTER

Nailed. Goal threat from corners. Arsenal’s clean sheet probability at the Emirates is the best defensive asset in MD12. Saliba has scored from set pieces twice in Europe this season. A 6-point goal + 4-point clean sheet combination makes him a premium pick.

Alphonso Davies — DEF — €6.0m
Bayern | Day 2 (Wed) | vs Atalanta (H)
STARTER

Bayern lead 6-1 on aggregate. This is a procession at the Allianz Arena. Atalanta need to score five unanswered goals to progress — it simply won’t happen. Davies offers attacking returns from left-back plus a near-certain clean sheet. With Atalanta’s spirit likely broken, Bayern defenders are as close to guaranteed 4 clean sheet points as you’ll get.

Pau Cubársí — DEF — €4.5m
Barcelona | Day 2 (Wed) | vs Newcastle (H)
STARTER

A budget gem. The tie is level at 1-1 and Barcelona play at Camp Nou, where they’ve been outstanding in Europe. Cubársí is nailed in Flick’s defence and offers set-piece threat as an aerial presence. At €4.5m, he frees up budget for premium attackers elsewhere.

Bench DEF: Nuno Mendes — DEF — €5.5m
PSG | Day 1 (Tue) | vs Chelsea (A)
BENCH

Attacking full-back with assist potential. PSG’s 5-2 aggregate lead means a comfortable evening, though Chelsea will push for goals. Sits on the bench behind the three starters but auto-subs in if needed.

Midfielders

Declan Rice — MID — €7.0m
Arsenal | Day 1 (Tue) | vs Leverkusen (H)
STARTER

Arsenal’s set-piece king. Rice takes corners, free kicks near the box and has scored from distance in the Champions League this season. MID clean sheet = 1 point, MID goal = 5 points. The Emirates crowd will be electric for a tie that’s level on aggregate. Rice is the engine of everything Arsenal do — nailed, on set pieces, in a game both sides must win.

Joshua Kimmich — MID — €7.5m
Bayern | Day 2 (Wed) | vs Atalanta (H)
STARTER

Bayern’s 6-1 aggregate lead means a stress-free evening at the Allianz Arena. Kimmich takes corners and free kicks, operates as a deep-lying playmaker and has racked up 4 assists in this season’s UCL. The goalkeeper crisis at Bayern doesn’t affect outfield players — Kimmich will play his usual role and the chance of attacking returns in a relaxed fixture is high.

Pedri — MID — €7.0m
Barcelona | Day 2 (Wed) | vs Newcastle (H)
STARTER

Barcelona at Camp Nou in a tie level at 1-1. This is the biggest game of the round for pure attacking entertainment. Pedri is the creative hub — 3 UCL assists this season, heavily involved in Barcelona’s short-passing combinations in the final third. Newcastle will sit deep and try to counter, giving Pedri space to operate. MID goal = 5 points, assist = 3.

Gabriel Martinelli — MID — €7.5m
Arsenal | Day 1 (Tue) | vs Leverkusen (H)
STARTER

Six UCL goals this season — Arsenal’s top European scorer. Martinelli has been rested at the weekend, which screams “saved for the big one.” Classified as a MID in UCL Fantasy, which means 5 points per goal rather than the 4 he’d get as a forward. Leverkusen are missing key defensive personnel. Martinelli at the Emirates in a must-win tie is one of the highest-ceiling picks available.

Bench MID: Vitinha — MID — €7.0m
PSG | Day 1 (Tue) | vs Chelsea (A)
BENCH

PSG’s set-piece specialist and creative conductor. Takes free kicks, corners from the right, and has been in superb form. The 5-2 aggregate lead means PSG can control the tempo. Vitinha is an excellent auto-sub option who could easily haul if called upon.

Forwards

Viktor Gyökeres — FWD — €9.5m
Arsenal | Day 1 (Tue) | vs Leverkusen (H)
★ CAPTAIN OPTION 1

The panel’s top captain pick for Day 1. Gyökeres came off the bench to score against Everton at the weekend, confirming his fitness and sharpness. He’s expected to return to the starting XI for the biggest game of Arsenal’s season. The tie is level at 1-1 — Arsenal need goals and Gyökeres is their primary source. FWD goal = 4 points, doubled with the armband = 8. His movement and finishing in the box are elite.

Robert Lewandowski — FWD — €10.5m
Barcelona | Day 2 (Wed) | vs Newcastle (H)
★ CAPTAIN OPTION 2

If you prefer the Wednesday captain gambit, Lewandowski at Camp Nou is the pick. Barcelona’s record at home in Europe under Flick is exceptional. The tie is level at 1-1, meaning Barça will push for goals from the first whistle. Lewandowski has 7 UCL goals this season and takes penalties. Newcastle’s defence has been suspect in high-pressure European away fixtures. This is a game tailor-made for the Polish striker.

Thomas Müller — FWD — €5.5m
Bayern | Day 2 (Wed) | vs Atalanta (H)
STARTER

The ultimate budget forward. Bayern lead 6-1 and will rotate some of their bigger names, but Müller’s experience and positional intelligence mean he’s likely to start in a tie that’s effectively a training match. At €5.5m, he frees up budget for the premiums above. Even in a relaxed Bayern performance, Müller’s knack for finding space in the box makes him a constant goal threat. FWD goal = 4 points.

Bench FWD: Mohamed Salah — FWD — €10.5m
Liverpool | Day 2 (Wed) | vs Galatasaray (H)
BENCH

Liverpool trail 1-0 from the first leg and host Galatasaray at Anfield. Salah is Liverpool’s talisman and Anfield under the lights in a must-win European tie is his stage. He sits on the bench only because the three starting forwards offer stronger fixture profiles, but Salah is a premium auto-sub with genuine haul potential. If you’re feeling brave, you could start him over Müller — the panel was split on this one.

Captain Strategy

🏆 The Savant’s Captain Verdict

Day 1 captain (safe): Viktor Gyökeres — nailed starter, level aggregate, Emirates fortress, rested at weekend. Captaining on Day 1 means you lock in your armband early and avoid the stress of waiting for Wednesday.

Day 2 captain (bold): Robert Lewandowski — Camp Nou, level aggregate, penalty taker, 7 UCL goals this season. The advantage of waiting for Day 2 is that if Gyökeres hauls on Tuesday without the armband, you can still back Lewandowski to match or beat him. The risk is that both blank and you’ve missed the boat.

Panel split: 3 votes Gyökeres, 2 votes Lewandowski. The safe play wins.

Remember: There is NO vice-captain in UCL Fantasy. Your captain choice is final — choose wisely.

Budget Breakdown

💰 Squad Cost

GKs: Raya (€5.5m) + Donnarumma (€5.5m) = €11.0m
DEFs: Saliba (€6.0m) + Davies (€6.0m) + Cubársí (€4.5m) + Nuno Mendes (€5.5m) = €22.0m
MIDs: Rice (€7.0m) + Kimmich (€7.5m) + Pedri (€7.0m) + Martinelli (€7.5m) + Vitinha (€7.0m) = €36.0m
FWDs: Gyökeres (€9.5m) + Lewandowski (€10.5m) + Müller (€5.5m) + Salah (€10.5m) = €36.0m

Total: €105.0m — Requires some value adjustments or slightly cheaper alternatives if you’re tight on budget. Swap Salah (€10.5m) for Jens Petter Hauge (€5.0m) to save €5.5m, or drop Donnarumma to a €4.0m backup keeper.

Key Fixtures at a Glance

Arsenal vs Leverkusen — Tue LEVEL 1-1

Our most-targeted fixture with 4 players (Raya, Saliba, Rice, Martinelli, Gyökeres). Level aggregate + Emirates home advantage = maximum attacking intent from both sides. This is where the points come from.

Bayern vs Atalanta — Wed BAYERN LEAD 6-1

Three players from a dead tie (Davies, Kimmich, Müller). Bayern can play at 70% intensity and still win. Clean sheet probability is high; attacking returns are a bonus. The goalkeeper crisis doesn’t affect our outfield picks.

Barcelona vs Newcastle — Wed LEVEL 1-1

Three players (Cubársí, Pedri, Lewandowski). Camp Nou in a tie-deciding second leg. Barcelona are favourites and Flick’s side have been devastating at home. Newcastle’s away European record is mixed — expect Barcelona to dominate possession and create chances.

Alternative Picks & Differentials

No squad is one-size-fits-all. Here are the swaps the panel debated most:

  • Salah over Müller as a starter: If you want ceiling over floor, Salah at Anfield in a must-win tie (Liverpool trail 1-0) could outscore the Bayern forward. The risk is Liverpool’s shaky form and Alisson’s fitness doubt.
  • Grimaldo (DEF, €5.5m, Leverkusen): Returns from suspension. Leverkusen’s most attacking full-back. A genuine differential if you think the visitors can score at the Emirates.
  • Son Heung-min (FWD, €9.0m, Spurs): Tottenham trail 5-2 but play at home. Desperate teams create chances — and Son is the man who finishes them. Very high-risk, very high-reward.
  • Hauge (FWD, €5.0m, Bodø/Glimt): Budget enabler. Bodø lead 3-0 and play away at Sporting. Even in a loss, Hauge could nick a goal on the counter. At €5.0m, he’s the cheapest route to a starting forward.

Chip Considerations

If you haven’t used your Limitless chip yet, MD12 is a strong candidate. The two level-aggregate ties (Arsenal vs Leverkusen, Barcelona vs Newcastle) plus Bayern’s clean sheet guarantee create a rare combination of ceiling and floor. Limitless removes budget constraints entirely, allowing you to stack premiums across both days.

If you’re holding for the quarter-finals, that’s defensible too — but the QF fixtures aren’t guaranteed to be this inviting. The panel’s split: 3 say play Limitless now, 2 say hold for QFs.

Wildcard holders should save it for the quarter-final transition, where team compositions will shift dramatically as 8 sides are eliminated.
