R16 Leg 2 Day 1 Preview — Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea & Sporting

Tuesday’s four second-leg ties broken down for UCL Fantasy managers. One genuine contest, one miracle required, and two dead rubbers — here’s how The Savant panel would approach Day 1 of Matchday 12.

The Champions League Round of 16 resumes on Tuesday 17 March with four second-leg fixtures that span the entire spectrum of competitive intensity. From Arsenal’s knife-edge tie with Leverkusen to Man City’s near-impossible mountain against Real Madrid, every match carries different implications for your UCL Fantasy squad.

The Savant panel has assessed each tie through the lens of aggregate context, injury updates, and likely team selection to give you the clearest possible picture of where the points will come from.

Tuesday 17 March — Day 1 Fixtures

Sporting CP vs Bodø/Glimt · José Alvalade · 17:45 UTC · Bodø lead 3-0
Arsenal vs Bayer Leverkusen · Emirates Stadium · 20:00 UTC · Level 1-1
Man City vs Real Madrid · Etihad Stadium · 20:00 UTC · Real lead 3-0
Chelsea vs PSG · Stamford Bridge · 20:00 UTC · PSG lead 5-2

1. Arsenal vs Bayer Leverkusen — The Main Event

Arsenal vs Leverkusen 1-1 AGG
Emirates Stadium · 20:00 UTC · Winner faces Bodø/Sporting in QFs

This is the tie of the night and the centrepiece of your Day 1 UCL Fantasy squad. The aggregate is level at 1-1 after Kai Havertz rescued Arsenal with a last-gasp penalty in Germany. Both sides have everything to play for, and the Emirates will be rocking.

Injury Watch

Arsenal have concerns. Jurrien Timber (ankle) was forced off in the first half against Everton on Saturday and is a major doubt. Martin Odegaard (knee) has not featured recently and remains a major doubt. Leandro Trossard (knock) missed the Everton match and is touch-and-go. Mikel Merino (broken foot) is out until the end of the season.

The saving grace? Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Gabriel, and David Raya are all expected to be fully fit and available.

The Savant’s Picks

  • Bukayo Saka (MID, £9.5m) — The standout pick from this fixture. Arsenal’s most creative force, nailed on to start, and plays on the front foot at home in a must-win tie. Midfielders earn 5 points per goal and 1 point for a clean sheet, making Saka the complete fantasy package.
  • Kai Havertz (FWD, £7.5m) — Scored the crucial penalty in the first leg. Havertz has been Arsenal’s big-game man this season and will lead the line again. FWDs earn 4 points per goal but 0 for clean sheets.
  • David Raya (GK, £5.5m) — Arsenal boast one of the best home clean sheet records in Europe. A shutout at the Emirates earns Raya 4 points from the clean sheet alone, plus potential save points. A solid premium GK pick.
Captain Pick: Saka is The Savant’s top captain recommendation for Day 1. A must-win match at the Emirates, full competitive intensity, and he’s Arsenal’s most likely source of goals and assists. Remember: your captain’s points are doubled, and there is no vice-captain safety net.

2. Chelsea vs PSG — The Miracle Mission

Chelsea vs PSG PSG LEAD 5-2
Stamford Bridge · 20:00 UTC · Chelsea need 4+ unanswered goals

Chelsea trail 5-2 on aggregate after a catastrophic collapse in Paris where Filip Jorgensen’s error opened the floodgates. Needing to score at least four without reply — or five if PSG score once — this is an almost impossible task. But “almost” is important.

Injury Watch

Estevao Willian (hamstring) is a major doubt and has not been seen since the FA Cup tie at Hull City. Jamie Gittens (hamstring) is out after suffering a recurrence. Levi Colwill (ACL) remains a long-term absentee. PSG, by contrast, are expected to be at near full strength.

The Savant’s Picks

  • PSG attackers are the play here. Chelsea must throw men forward, which will leave acres of space in behind. The Parisian frontline could feast on the counter. Target any nailed-on PSG forward or attacking midfielder — they have the luxury of picking their moments.
  • Avoid Chelsea defenders entirely. Chelsea must concede control to chase the tie. Clean sheet points are fantasy fiction in this scenario.
  • Chelsea attackers carry speculative upside. If you believe in miracles, a Chelsea attacker could haul. The Blues will throw the kitchen sink at PSG, and goals at Stamford Bridge are inevitable even in defeat. Cole Palmer (MID) and Nicolas Jackson (FWD) are the speculative picks if you fancy a punt.

3. Man City vs Real Madrid — The Dead Rubber That Isn’t

Man City vs Real Madrid REAL LEAD 3-0
Etihad Stadium · 20:00 UTC · City need 4 goals without reply

Real Madrid’s 3-0 first-leg demolition at the Bernabéu leaves City needing a miracle of their own. However, don’t dismiss this match entirely — Pep Guardiola’s pride and the Etihad crowd will ensure Man City come out swinging, even if the outcome feels predetermined.

Injury Watch

The headline for Real Madrid is devastating: Kylian Mbappé (knee), Jude Bellingham (hamstring), and Rodrygo (ACL, season-ending) are all out. Éder Milita˜o (hamstring) is doubtful. Ferland Mendy (muscle) is out. This is a weakened Real Madrid side, but the 3-0 cushion means Álvaro Arbeloa can manage minutes carefully.

For City, Josko Gvardiol (tibia fracture) is a long-term absentee. Mateo Kovacic has returned to training and may feature. The rest of the squad is largely fit, which actually makes this interesting from a fantasy perspective.

The Savant’s Picks

  • Erling Haaland (FWD, £11.0m) — If you’re not captaining Saka, Haaland is your alternative. City will attack relentlessly at the Etihad, and Haaland is the focal point. Madrid’s defensive absentees (Milita˜o, Mendy) weaken their backline considerably. FWD scoring: 4 pts per goal.
  • Phil Foden (MID, £9.0m) — In a match where City will dominate possession and push for goals, Foden’s creativity will be central. Midfield scoring (5 pts per goal) gives him an edge over Haaland in pure fantasy terms.
  • Avoid Real Madrid defenders. Even with a 3-0 lead, a motivated Man City at the Etihad will create chances. Real’s weakened backline makes a clean sheet unlikely.

4. Sporting CP vs Bodø/Glimt — The Fairy Tale Continues?

Sporting CP vs Bodø/Glimt BODØ LEAD 3-0
José Alvalade Stadium · 17:45 UTC · Early kickoff

The surprise package of the Champions League, Bodø/Glimt carry a stunning 3-0 lead into Lisbon. Sporting must produce one of the great comebacks at the José Alvalade to progress, while the Norwegian side need only avoid capitulation.

The Savant’s Picks

  • Sporting attackers are the punt. At 3-0 down, Sporting will throw everything at Bodø from the first whistle. Viktor Gyokeres (FWD) is the obvious play if you want exposure here — he’ll lead the line in front of a desperate home crowd.
  • Bodø have a sneaky clean sheet angle. They can sit deep, absorb pressure, and frustrate Sporting. But the 17:45 kickoff means this match finishes before the evening games — you won’t know results before the 20:00 deadline locks.
  • Approach with caution. Neither side offers the reliability of Arsenal or the upside of PSG’s counter-attacking potential. This is a filler fixture for most squads.

The Savant’s Day 1 Priority Ranking

If you’re building a squad weighted towards Tuesday’s matches, here is how The Savant panel ranks the four fixtures by UCL Fantasy upside:

  1. Arsenal vs Leverkusen — Maximum competitive intensity, both ends of the pitch in play. Stack Arsenal assets (Saka, Havertz, Raya).
  2. Chelsea vs PSG — Goals guaranteed. PSG attackers for the safe play, Chelsea attackers for the differential punt.
  3. Man City vs Real Madrid — City will attack. Haaland and Foden carry upside. Avoid Madrid’s weakened defence.
  4. Sporting vs Bodø/Glimt — Speculative only. Gyokeres if you want a gamble. Otherwise, spend your budget elsewhere.
Day 1 Captain Ranking:

1. Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) — best fixture, highest floor, nailed
2. Erling Haaland (Man City) — will start, City will attack
3. Cole Palmer (Chelsea) — high risk, high reward against a PSG side that may sit back

Remember: there is no vice-captain in UCL Fantasy. Pick wisely.

Chip Considerations for Day 1

If you are playing your Limitless chip this matchday, Tuesday provides excellent value. Arsenal’s competitive fixture combined with the goal-fest potential of Chelsea vs PSG gives you clear targets. Load up on premiums you wouldn’t normally afford.

If you are holding your Wildcard for after this round, use Day 1 results to inform your restructure. Watch how Arsenal and Chelsea perform before committing to a new squad shape.

Crucially: there are only two chips in UCL Fantasy — Wildcard and Limitless. There is no Bench Boost, Free Hit, or Triple Captain. If you have already used both, you are playing with your base squad and free transfers only.

Deadline Reminder: The Day 1 deadline is Tuesday 17 March at 17:45 UTC (Sporting vs Bodø kicks off first). Set your squad before then — there are no mid-day deadline windows. If you are saving your team for Wednesday’s fixtures, remember you still need a valid squad for Day 1.

Stay tuned for our Day 2 Preview covering Wednesday’s ties: Barcelona vs Newcastle, Spurs vs Atletico, Bayern vs Atalanta, and Liverpool vs Galatasaray. That article drops tomorrow morning.
