UCL Fantasy Quarter-Final Best Defenders: Value

Everyone obsesses over forwards and midfielders in UCL Fantasy. That is a mistake. Defenders who keep clean sheets earn 4 bonus points on top of their base returns, and the best ones chip in with goals, assists, and bonus recoveries too. In a knockout format where tight, cagey matches are the norm, a well-constructed defence can be the difference between a green arrow and a red one.

Our expert panel has crunched the numbers on every remaining defender across all eight Quarter-Final sides. Here are the rankings, split into tiers, with the data to back up every pick.

Reminder: Clean sheet points require 60+ minutes played. GK/DEF clean sheet bonus = 4 points. GK/DEF goal = 6 points. Assist = 3 points. These are the most efficient point-scoring routes in the game.

Tier 1: The Must-Owns

These defenders have proven themselves across the entire campaign. The numbers speak for themselves.

1. Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) - £6.2m

67 total points | 10.81 PPM | 7.4 avg | 4 CS | 2 goals, 2 assists | 42% ownership | Form: 4.5

The best defender in UCL Fantasy by a country mile. Van Dijk sits at 10.81 points per million, which is not just the best among defenders, it is the best value of any outfield player in the entire game. For context, Mbappe delivers 7.39 PPM at nearly double the price. Van Dijk's 67 total points place him fifth overall across all positions. He has played 810 minutes, meaning he has featured in virtually every match, and his 7.4-point average is elite. Two goals and two assists from centre-back add attacking upside to the clean sheet floor. At 42% ownership he is far from a differential, but dropping him would be reckless. Liverpool face PSG in the quarters, and while that is a step up in opposition, Anfield remains a fortress.

2. Gabriel (Arsenal) - £5.7m

50 total points | 8.77 PPM | 7.1 avg | 5 CS | 1 goal, 1 assist | 33% ownership | Form: 4.5

Gabriel leads all defenders with five clean sheets, the joint-highest tally in the tournament alongside teammate David Raya. His 7.1-point average is remarkable, suggesting he consistently delivers solid returns rather than relying on one-off hauls. At £5.7m and 8.77 PPM, he is outstanding value. Arsenal face Sporting CP, arguably the most favourable draw of the four ties for clean sheet potential. Gabriel also carries set-piece threat from corners, which adds a 6-point goal ceiling to every match. His form rating of 4.5 confirms he is peaking at exactly the right time.

Tier 2: The Premium Options

3. William Saliba (Arsenal) - £5.9m

39 total points | 6.61 PPM | 5.6 avg | 4 CS | 0 goals, 0 assists | 9% ownership | Form: 4.0

If you already own Gabriel, doubling up on Arsenal's defence is a genuine strategy given the Sporting draw. Saliba has four clean sheets and a solid 5.6-point average. He lacks the attacking output of his centre-back partner, which is why his ownership sits at just 9%. But if you are chasing clean sheets above all else, Arsenal are the team to target, and Saliba at £5.9m is cheaper than Van Dijk. The 4.0 form rating suggests he is in good nick heading into the knockouts.

4. Dean Huijsen (Real Madrid) - £4.5m

40 total points | 8.89 PPM | 5.0 avg | 3 CS | 0 goals, 0 assists | 10% ownership | Form: 2.5

Here is a name that does not get enough attention. Huijsen delivers 8.89 points per million, the highest PPM of any defender in the game. At just £4.5m, he is a budget enabler who lets you splurge elsewhere. Three clean sheets from a Real Madrid defence that will be motivated to shut down Bayern Munich gives him a solid floor. The form of 2.5 is the one concern, but the QFs represent a reset, and Real Madrid's defensive solidity in big European nights is well documented. At 10% ownership, he offers a nice differential edge too.

Tier 3: The Value Gems

This is where squads are won and lost. The defenders below cost between £4.1m and £5.0m, freeing up budget for midfield and forward premiums while still delivering genuine points.

5. Andy Robertson (Liverpool) - £5.0m

38 total points | 7.6 PPM | 6.3 avg | 3 CS | 1 goal, 1 assist | 2% ownership | Form: 4.0

Robertson is a remarkable differential at just 2% ownership. His 6.3-point average is the highest among all defenders priced £5.0m or below. That attacking output (a goal and an assist) from left-back makes him more than a clean sheet merchant. He has a form rating of 4.0, suggesting recent performances have been strong, and yet almost nobody owns him. The PSG fixture is tougher than Sporting, but Robertson's upside from overlapping runs and set-piece deliveries makes him a superb pick for managers willing to look beyond the template.

6. Gonçalo Inácio (Sporting CP) - £4.5m

39 total points | 8.67 PPM | 4.3 avg | 2 CS | 1 goal, 0 assists | 2% ownership | Form: 5.0

A form rating of 5.0 means Inácio is the hottest defender in UCL Fantasy right now. At £4.5m and 8.67 PPM, the Sporting centre-back is excellent value. He has 39 total points with a goal from defence, and his 2% ownership makes him a genuine rank-climber. The Arsenal tie is a tough one for Sporting clean sheets, admittedly, but in tight knockout matches, Inácio's consistent involvement (776 minutes played) and current form make him worth the gamble. If Sporting nick a clean sheet at home in the first leg, the returns will be enormous relative to his price.

7. Iván Fresneda (Sporting CP) - £4.1m

36 total points | 8.78 PPM | 4.0 avg | 2 CS | 0 goals, 1 assist | 1% ownership | Form: 3.0

The cheapest worthwhile defender in the game. Fresneda at £4.1m is essentially a free roster spot that still delivers 8.78 PPM. He has played 830 minutes, more than any other Sporting defender, meaning he is nailed on for starts. An assist adds some attacking upside, and two clean sheets prove he is part of a functional defensive unit. At 1% ownership, he is about as differential as it gets. Perfect for managers who want to stack their midfield and attack with expensive assets.

Budget hack: Running Fresneda (£4.1m) and Huijsen (£4.5m) in your back line saves you £3.5m compared to Van Dijk and Gabriel. That is enough to upgrade a midfield spot from Gravenberch (£5.5m) to Vinícius Júnior (£9.6m). The maths matters.

Tier 4: The Specialists

8. Jonathan Tah (Bayern Munich) - £5.4m

37 total points | 6.85 PPM | 4.1 avg | 2 CS | 1 goal, 0 assists | 6% ownership | Form: 3.0

Tah is a steady, reliable option from a Bayern side that will fancy their chances against Real Madrid. Two clean sheets and a goal from centre-back give him a reasonable floor, though his 4.1 average suggests he is more of a 4-pointer than a match-winner. At £5.4m he is competitively priced, but there are better value options above him in this list.

9. Geny Catamo (Sporting CP) - £5.4m

34 total points | 6.3 PPM | 3.8 avg | 2 CS | 1 goal, 2 assists | 1% ownership | Form: 3.0

Catamo is classified as a defender but plays in an attacking role, which gives him a unique profile. One goal and two assists are strong attacking numbers from the back line. At 1% ownership he is a hidden gem, though at £5.4m he is slightly overpriced compared to the Fresneda/Inácio route into Sporting's defence.

The Goalkeeper Question

Your goalkeeper choice is intrinsically linked to your defensive strategy, so here is a quick ranking of the remaining shot-stoppers.

Raya tops our ranking despite Courtois having more total points. Why? Six clean sheets versus four, and a £0.7m saving. Raya's form rating of 4.5 is also significantly higher than Courtois' 3.0. The Arsenal-Sporting fixture profile is the most clean-sheet-friendly of the four ties, making Raya the safest pick. Courtois has the higher ceiling with 55 total points and 56 saves, but at £6.2m he is expensive for a goalkeeper. Rui Silva at £4.8m with a form of 5.0 is the budget option, though Sporting conceding against Arsenal is more likely than not.

Injury Watch

Avoid these defenders: Jules Koundé (Barcelona, £5.6m) is flagged as injured. Jurriën Timber (Arsenal, £5m) is also injured. Alvaro Carreras (Real Madrid, £5m) and Geovany Quenda (Sporting, £5.2m) both carry injury flags. Manuel Neuer (Bayern, £6m) is injured in goal. Check the latest availability before your transfers.

UCL Fantasy's Recommended Defensive Setup

Here are three defensive templates depending on your budget strategy:

Premium Defence (£17.4m for GK + 3 DEF)

• GK: David Raya (Arsenal, £5.5m) - 6 clean sheets, form 4.5
• DEF: Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool, £6.2m) - best defender in the game
• DEF: Gabriel (Arsenal, £5.7m) - 5 clean sheets, set-piece threat

Balanced Defence (£15.2m for GK + 3 DEF)

• GK: David Raya (Arsenal, £5.5m)
• DEF: Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool, £6.2m)
• DEF: Iván Fresneda (Sporting, £4.1m) - budget enabler at 8.78 PPM

Budget Defence (£14.4m for GK + 3 DEF)

• GK: Rui Silva (Sporting, £4.8m) - form 5.0, bargain price
• DEF: Dean Huijsen (Real Madrid, £4.5m) - highest PPM of any defender
• DEF: Iván Fresneda (Sporting, £4.1m) - cheapest nailed defender

The budget defence saves you £3.0m compared to the premium setup. That is serious money to reinvest in your midfield, where assets like Vinícius Júnior (£9.6m), Lamine Yamal (£9.9m), or Bukayo Saka (£9.5m) can be the difference between a rank surge and stagnation.

UCL Fantasy says: "The smartest UCL Fantasy managers do not pick their defence first and fill the rest around it. They decide how much budget they want to allocate to defence, then pick the best value within that budget. Van Dijk is a lock, but after that, it is all about points per million. Fresneda at £4.1m giving you 8.78 PPM is the kind of efficiency that wins leagues."
