The biggest mistake new UCL Fantasy managers make is treating it like FPL with a different badge. It is not. Manual substitutions, captain changes and playing days reward active management, and I would build every squad with those decisions in mind.
UCL Fantasy rewards active management across each matchday. You select 15 players with a €100m starting budget: two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards. A valid starting XI needs one goalkeeper, at least three defenders, at least two midfielders and at least one forward. During the league phase, no more than three players can come from one club.
Transfers
Managers receive two free transfers before each league-phase matchday and can carry one unused transfer, giving a maximum of three for the following round. Extra moves cost four points. Plan changes against the full schedule rather than reacting to one fixture, and remember that using Wildcard or Limitless removes any carried transfer.
Unlimited transfers return before the knockout phase play-offs and the round of 16. The allowance then changes by round, so the league-phase habit of saving a transfer does not apply throughout the whole competition.
Captains and substitutions
Most matchdays are split across playing days. After one day finishes, you may manually replace up to four players who have already played with unused bench players whose clubs are still to play, provided the final formation stays valid. The removed players lose their points, so a substitution is a calculated gamble rather than a free second score.
You may also switch the captain to someone yet to play. The original double score is lost and the decision cannot be reversed. Matchday 1 spans three days, providing more flexibility than usual. Matchday 8 has all fixtures at the same time, so there is no manual substitution or captain-switch window after games begin.
Automatic substitutions
If you make no manual changes and a starter does not play, the game can use an eligible bench replacement automatically. Once you intervene manually, you should not rely on the same safety net. Bench order matters, as do position rules, and a non-playing captain does not automatically transfer the double-points bonus to his replacement.
Scoring implications
Goals and assists are only part of the game. Clean sheets help goalkeepers, defenders and midfielders; saves give goalkeepers another route; player-of-the-match awards and ball recoveries can reward strong all-round performances. This makes secure minutes and repeatable involvement important even when a player is not an obvious scorer.
Wildcard and Limitless
Wildcard allows unlimited permanent transfers while retaining the €100m budget. Limitless removes the budget for one matchday, after which the previous squad returns. Neither chip can be used on a round where everyone already receives unlimited transfers, including Matchday 1. Both are strongest when several fixture swings or captaincy opportunities align, not simply after one disappointing score.
Use the fixture calendar to map transfer windows, the Transfer Planner to preserve alternative routes, and always save changes before the first kick-off. The official deadline is the opening fixture of each matchday, not the start of the first evening television game.
