Tuesday gives UCL Fantasy managers the glamorous choices. Harry Kane visits Viking. Michael Olise arrives after a 21-point Matchday 1 haul. Lamine Yamal faces Galatasaray with Raphinha ruled out.
Wednesday is different. There is no obvious home banker, Liverpool's attack has been stripped back by injuries and several of the best forwards face awkward away games.
That does not mean you should never move the armband. It means the decision must start with the score already secured on Tuesday.
The question is not simply: who is Wednesday's best captain?
It is: which Wednesday player has enough upside to justify throwing away Kane or Olise's doubled return?
The short answer
- Best Wednesday switch: Ermedin Demirović (€6.0m) away to Slovan Bratislava
- Safest premium alternative: Kylian Mbappé (€11.0m) away to Roma
- Best aggressive option: Serhou Guirassy (€8.5m) away to Bodø/Glimt
- Best fixture-proof gamble: Ousmane Dembélé (€10.0m) away to Manchester City
- Liverpool verdict: wait for the confirmed XI, but do not force the armband onto a weakened attack
My starting plan is simple. If Kane or Olise scores eight points or more, I hold. If the captain returns five or fewer, I switch. Six or seven is where squad ownership, rank and appetite for risk matter.
Why the Wednesday pool is unusually thin
Liverpool at LASK initially looked like the obvious place to shop. The Austrian side failed to score on Matchday 1 and Liverpool normally provide several captain candidates.
That assumption no longer survives the team news.
Hugo Ekitiké is out with a long-term Achilles injury. Alexander Isak has a thigh problem, Cody Gakpo has an ankle injury and Dominik Szoboszlai missed Sunday's 3-0 defeat by Manchester City with a hamstring complaint. Liverpool's own injury update says recovering any of that group for the Austria trip will be difficult.
UEFA's latest predicted XI has Lewis Koumas leading the line, with Rio Ngumoha, Florian Wirtz and Federico Chiesa behind him. Koumas made his first Premier League start against City on Sunday. Wirtz played 66 minutes, while Chiesa appeared only in the 88th minute.
That front four could still beat LASK. The problem is captaincy clarity. There is no secure penalty-taking striker, no proven central role and no guarantee that the goals will concentrate around the most popular Fantasy asset.
Liverpool play in Wednesday's early 17:45 BST slot, so managers should see the confirmed XI before the management deadline. Use that information. Just do not mistake a good badge and fixture for a safe captain.
1. Ermedin Demirović: the best pure switch
Demirović has the cleanest combination of fixture, role and price.
The Stuttgart forward scored a hat-trick against Viking, collected the Player of the Match award and finished Matchday 1 with 17 Fantasy points. UEFA's latest team news predicts him to start at the head of Stuttgart's attack against Slovan Bratislava.
The opponent is the decisive part. Slovan conceded six goals to Paris on Matchday 1 and have lost all nine of their Champions League proper matches. Stuttgart also won 3-1 on their previous visit to Bratislava in January 2025.
There is still risk. Demirović played 62 minutes in Matchday 1, and a hat-trick is not a sustainable weekly expectation. Deniz Undav offers Stuttgart another route through the middle.
But a Wednesday captain does not need to be perfect. He needs to offer enough ceiling to improve a disappointing Tuesday score. Demirović does that in the best fixture available.
Verdict: switch to Demirović after a captain return of five points or fewer. At six or seven, he is a calculated gamble rather than an automatic move.
2. Kylian Mbappé: the safest premium route
Mbappé is the player most likely to be sitting in Fantasy squads already. He is currently the game's most-owned forward and scored six points against Inter on Matchday 1.
Real Madrid travel to Roma, which is not the softest fixture of the round. However, UEFA predicts Mbappé to start and lists no fitness doubt around him. Rodrygo is ruled out, leaving fewer obvious routes for Real Madrid's attacking responsibility to be diluted.
Mbappé does not have Demirović's fixture, but he offers a more established premium role. That makes him particularly useful for managers who want to move from a blank without taking the wildest possible swing.
There is one important distinction. If your Tuesday captain returns seven points, switching to Mbappé is not a free shot. You are discarding 14 captain points and need Mbappé to score eight just to improve the total by two.
Verdict: the safest Wednesday alternative for existing owners. A strong switch from a blank, but not a reason to throw away a good Tuesday return.
3. Serhou Guirassy: embrace the chaos
Guirassy scored twice against Villarreal for 13 Fantasy points in Matchday 1. He now has 21 goals in his first 29 Champions League appearances, which places his European scoring record well beyond a one-night hot streak.
The fixture at Bodø/Glimt looks attractive if you stop at Bayern's 5-0 Matchday 1 win. The deeper numbers make it much more volatile.
Bodø have won their last five European home matches and scored exactly three goals in each. They have scored at least twice in 11 of their last 13 European games. Dortmund, meanwhile, have lost their last three Champions League away matches.
This is not a comfortable away banker. It is a potential shootout.
That suits Guirassy more than it suits Dortmund defenders. UEFA predicts him to start, and his six attempts against Villarreal underline the centrality of his role.
Verdict: the best high-variance captain for managers chasing upside. Prefer Demirović for fixture security; prefer Guirassy if you actively want the game most likely to become chaotic.
4. Ousmane Dembélé: elite player, difficult fixture
Dembélé produced two goals, two assists and 16 Fantasy points as Paris beat Slovan 6-1. UEFA includes him among its leading Wednesday captain candidates and predicts him to start at Manchester City.
The attraction is obvious. Dembélé can score, assist and collect Player of the Match points in the same game. Paris also possess enough attacking quality to trouble any opponent.
The objection is equally obvious. Manchester City arrive after winning 3-0 at Anfield and are a much stronger defensive test than Slovan. Dembélé's ceiling survives the fixture, but his probability of reaching it falls.
This is the sort of captaincy move that makes sense after a one or two-point Tuesday return. It is harder to justify when Kane or Olise has already delivered six or seven.
Verdict: a legitimate fixture-proof gamble, but fourth in the Wednesday order because the opponent raises the failure rate.
Liverpool: wait for the team, then resist the badge
Liverpool's early kick-off gives Fantasy managers valuable information. Confirmed line-ups should arrive at roughly 16:45 BST, one hour before the match begins.
If Isak or Gakpo unexpectedly starts, the conversation changes. Until then, the current evidence points elsewhere.
Wirtz is the most credible Liverpool option because UEFA predicts him in the central attacking line, but he has four Fantasy points so far and Liverpool created little against City. Chiesa is inexpensive and should start, yet his recent minutes provide no evidence for a captaincy-level role. Koumas is a €4.5m midfielder playing through the middle, but one senior league start does not make him a safe armband.
The correct response is not to ignore Liverpool. It is to separate starting a player in a good fixture from doubling that player's score.
Start Wirtz or Chiesa if they are in your squad and confirmed. Captain them only if the line-up creates a much clearer role than currently expected and your Tuesday score leaves you needing a genuine differential.
The hold-or-switch table
Tuesday captain scores nine or more
Hold. An 18-point captain return is already excellent. None of Wednesday's options is safe enough to justify surrendering it.
Tuesday captain scores eight
Usually hold. Demirović can beat it, but he must score nine before the switch adds anything to your total.
Tuesday captain scores six or seven
Make a strategic choice. Hold if protecting a strong rank. Switch to Demirović, Mbappé or Guirassy if you need upside and are comfortable accepting a lower floor.
Tuesday captain scores three to five
Switch. Demirović is first choice, Mbappé the safer premium alternative and Guirassy the aggressive route.
Tuesday captain blanks
Switch without hesitation. Check Wednesday's confirmed early line-ups first, then choose the best available player in your squad.
My final Wednesday ranking
- Ermedin Demirović: best fixture and best pure switch
- Kylian Mbappé: safest premium alternative
- Serhou Guirassy: highest-variance goals route
- Ousmane Dembélé: elite ceiling in the hardest fixture
- Florian Wirtz: Liverpool's best current option, but only after the XI is confirmed
The most important advice is not to decide Wednesday's captain today.
Set Kane, Olise or Yamal for Tuesday. See what they score. On Wednesday afternoon, check the confirmed line-ups, review the latest expected-points rankings and compare the upside with the points already banked.
The thin Wednesday pool increases the value of a solid Tuesday return. Do not twist simply because the game allows it.
