Best UCL Fantasy Captain Picks for the Round of 16

Our expected points model ranks every premium captain option for the R16 first legs.

Captaincy is the single biggest decision in UCL Fantasy each matchday. Double the points means double the reward — or double the pain. Here's how our xPts model ranks the options.

Captain Rankings — Expected Points

1Julián ÁlvarezAtlético Madrid8.4
2Mohamed SalahLiverpool7.6
3Álex BaenaAtlético Madrid7.1
4Anthony GordonNewcastle6.8
5Lamine YamalBarcelona6.5
6Harry KaneBayern München8 goals
7Michael OliseBayern München6 assists
8Vinícius JúniorReal Madrid4.8
Kylian MbappéReal Madrid0.0

1. Julián Álvarez (8.4 xPts) — Our Pick

Álvarez tops our model and it's not close. Atlético at the Metropolitano against Spurs is the perfect fixture. He's the focal point of Simeone's attack, takes set pieces, and Tottenham's high line gives him space to exploit. The away side will likely push forward, leaving gaps that Álvarez thrives in.

Ownership projection: ~15-20% — making him a genuine differential captain compared to Salah.

The edge: Captaining Álvarez over Salah gives you differential upside. If both score, you gain on the 40%+ who captain Salah. If only Álvarez delivers, you rocket up the rankings.

2. Mohamed Salah (7.6 xPts) — The Safe Pick

The most popular captain choice, and for good reason. Liverpool vs Galatasaray is the most lopsided fixture on paper. Salah has scored or assisted in the majority of his UCL appearances this season and rarely blanks when Liverpool are clear favourites. The risk? It's the safe choice — you won't gain rank on anyone who also captains him.

Ownership projection: 40-50% — the template captain.

3. Álex Baena (7.1 xPts) — The Dark Horse

Baena has been Atleti's creative engine this season — set pieces, through balls, and he gets into the box himself. At the Metropolitano against a Spurs side featuring several new faces still building chemistry (Simons, Kolo Muani, Palhinha), he could have a field day. Very low ownership makes him a genuine rank-changer.

4. Anthony Gordon (6.8 xPts) — Home Fortress

Ten UCL goals this season. At St James' Park. Against a Barcelona side that has conceded away in every European match. Gordon is the real deal. If you're bold, captaining him could be the move of the round.

Who to Avoid as Captain

Do NOT captain any Real Madrid player. Mbappé (0.0 xPts — injured), Bellingham (OUT), Rodrygo (OUT). Even Vinícius is a risk with the entire creative unit around him missing. The whole attack is compromised.

The Verdict

If you want to protect your rank: captain Salah. If you want to climb the rankings: captain Álvarez. Both are strong. Our panel goes Álvarez — the risk/reward ratio is better when you factor in ownership.
