Let us be honest. Tottenham are almost certainly going out. A 5-2 deficit against an Atletico Madrid side coached by Diego Simeone, a man who has built his entire career on defending leads, is about as daunting a task as exists in European football. Spurs would need to score at least four goals without reply, or win by an even greater margin if Atleti grab an away goal.
But here is the thing: from a UCL Fantasy perspective, this match might be more interesting than it first appears. Desperation breeds attacking football, and attacking football breeds fantasy points.
The Case for Spurs Assets
Tottenham have no choice but to go all-out attack from the first whistle. Ange Postecoglou will throw everything forward, knowing that a cautious approach achieves nothing. That means overlapping full-backs, an advanced midfield, and everyone pushing into Atletico's half.
The problem? Atletico are the best team in Europe at exploiting exactly this situation. Simeone will sit deep, absorb pressure, and hit Spurs on the counter with devastating efficiency. Every goal Tottenham score opens them up to a counter-attack that could effectively end the tie.
Xavi Simons (MID, £6.6m, 37pts)
Simons has the quality to produce something special on any given night. In a match where Spurs will dominate possession and create chances, his ability to dribble, shoot, and create makes him the most likely Tottenham player to deliver attacking returns. At 37 fantasy points, he has shown flashes without yet producing a truly elite haul. Could this be the night?
Pedro Porro (DEF, £5m, 59pts)
Porro is one of the highest-scoring defenders in UCL Fantasy with 59 points, and his attacking output from right-back is exceptional. He will push forward constantly on Wednesday, delivering crosses and getting into the box. The downside is obvious: a clean sheet is virtually impossible given the game state. But Porro does not need a clean sheet to score well. A goal or assist from a defender earns 6 and 3 points respectively, and his attacking involvement gives him a genuine chance of either.
Cristian Romero (DEF, £5m, 61pts)
Romero's 61 points make him the top-scoring Spurs asset. His aggression, aerial ability, and occasional forays forward have made him a fantasy gem. In a match where Spurs will have lots of corners and set pieces, his goal threat is real. But again, no clean sheet upside here, so you are purely banking on attacking returns.
Wilson Odobert (MID, £5.5m, 31pts)
A budget option who could benefit from the all-out-attack approach. Odobert offers pace and directness from the wing, and if Postecoglou pushes everyone forward, he could find himself in dangerous positions. At £5.5m, the risk is manageable.
The Case for Atletico Assets
This is where it gets interesting. Atletico have a three-goal cushion and will set up to protect it while punishing Spurs on the counter. Simeone's teams are masters of this approach, and they have the attacking quality to make it count.
Julián Álvarez (FWD, £9.1m, 65pts)
Álvarez is the standout pick from this fixture. With 65 fantasy points, he is Atleti's top scorer and one of the best forwards in the game. In a match where Spurs will leave spaces at the back, Álvarez will have counter-attacking opportunities galore. He is clinical in front of goal, intelligent in his movement, and will be the focal point of every Atleti breakaway.
The only question is whether Simeone starts him or keeps him fresh for the quarter-finals. Given the aggregate lead, there is a small rotation risk. However, Álvarez is so important to this Atleti side that resting him entirely feels unlikely.
Giuliano Simeone (MID, £6.2m, 48pts)
The manager's son has been one of Atleti's best performers in Europe, with 48 fantasy points from midfield. He is tireless, technically gifted, and thrives in counter-attacking situations. If Spurs push forward and leave gaps, Simeone will exploit them. He is a genuine differential pick who could deliver a big haul.
Marcos Llorente (MID, £6.9m, 43pts)
Llorente's versatility and engine make him a constant threat on the counter. He covers enormous ground, arrives in the box at the right moments, and has the quality to finish. In a game where Atleti will spend long periods without the ball before bursting forward, Llorente is perfectly suited.
Alexander Sørloth (FWD, £7.4m, 44pts)
If Álvarez is rested or plays only part of the match, Sørloth is the alternative. He offers a different profile, more of a target man who can hold the ball up and bring others into play. At 44 points, he has been productive, and counter-attacks with Sørloth as the outlet can be devastating.
The Goalkeeper Question
Guglielmo Vicario (GK, £5.1m, 46pts) will face a strange night. Spurs will dominate possession, meaning he will have relatively little to do for long stretches. But when Atleti do attack, they will be clinical. His save count might be low, and a clean sheet is unlikely given Atleti's counter-attacking quality.
Jan Oblak (GK, £5.8m, 22pts) is the more interesting fantasy pick here. He will face a barrage of shots from desperate Spurs players, and his save count could be enormous. Even if Spurs score two or three times, Oblak could rack up 4-5 saves to pad his score. At £5.8m, he is not cheap, but the save point potential is significant.
Should You Pick Spurs or Atleti Players?
Here is our framework:
- If you need to take risks (chasing in your mini-league), load up on Spurs attackers. They will push forward relentlessly, and if the miracle happens, you will be rewarded handsomely. Simons, Porro, and Kolo Muani (FWD, £7.6m, 27pts) are the picks.
- If you want to play it safe (protecting a lead), go Atleti. Álvarez and Giuliano Simeone on the counter will deliver steady returns without the variance of backing a lost cause.
- If you want to avoid this match entirely, that is also valid. Liverpool and Barcelona/Newcastle offer more reliable fantasy environments.
The Rotation Factor
With a 5-2 lead, Simeone might rest one or two key players with the quarter-finals in mind. Antoine Griezmann (FWD, £8.5m, 39pts) could be rested, and Álvarez might get only 60-70 minutes. On the Spurs side, Postecoglou will play his strongest XI, as this is their last chance.

The Verdict
This match is a trap and an opportunity in equal measure. The tie is over as a contest, but the game itself should produce goals from both sides. Atleti counter-attackers (Álvarez, Giuliano Simeone) are the safer fantasy bet. Spurs attackers (Simons, Porro) are the high-variance gamble. Choose based on your mini-league position and risk appetite.
Our advice? Pick one or two from this fixture at most. The real fantasy gold on Wednesday night is at Camp Nou and Anfield.
