Gabriel & Saka OUT: Arsenal's UCL Fantasy Quarter-Final Crisis
Arsenal's Champions League Quarter-Final campaign has been dealt a massive blow. Bukayo Saka will not feature against Sporting CP on Tuesday, Arteta confirmed today. Combined with Gabriel Magalhaes' ongoing right knee issue, Arsenal travel to Lisbon significantly weakened.
For UCL Fantasy managers, this changes everything. Two of Arsenal's highest-owned assets are either confirmed out or in serious doubt. Here is what you need to know before Tuesday's deadline.
🔴 Bukayo Saka: Confirmed OUT
Arteta's confirmation leaves no ambiguity. Saka will not be in the squad for the first leg in Lisbon. At £9.5m, he is Arsenal's most expensive UCL Fantasy asset and their primary creative outlet on the right flank.
Who replaces him? Leandro Trossard is the most likely candidate to slot in on the right side of Arsenal's front three. The Belgian has been a reliable deputy throughout the season and offers a different kind of threat: more direct, more willing to cut inside and shoot.
The alternative is Ethan Nwaneri (£5.2m, 4 pts), but Trossard's experience in knockout football makes him the far more likely starter for a match of this magnitude.
🟡 Gabriel Magalhaes: Doubtful
Gabriel limped off at 72 minutes in Arsenal's 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Southampton on Saturday. The Brazilian centre-back sat on the turf holding his right knee before being replaced, aggravating a pre-existing issue that already kept him out of international duty during the March break.
Unlike Saka, Gabriel has not been ruled out. But the signs are not encouraging. A player who cannot complete an FA Cup match three days before a Champions League Quarter-Final is a significant concern.
If Gabriel misses out, Cristhian Mosquera is expected to deputise alongside William Saliba. Arsenal arguably have the best defensive record in the competition this season, but losing Gabriel would be a blow to their set-piece threat and aerial dominance.
The UCL Fantasy Impact
Losing both Saka and potentially Gabriel has a cascading effect across your UCL Fantasy squad:
- Arsenal's clean sheet probability drops. Without Gabriel, the Saliba-Mosquera pairing is untested at this level. Sporting CP will fancy their chances, especially at home with Trincao in the kind of space Saka's absence creates.
- Arsenal's attacking ceiling drops. Saka has been Arsenal's most creative player in Europe. Trossard is a good replacement, but he does not create at the same volume. Expect fewer chances created from the right.
- All Arsenal assets take a hit. Odegaard, Martinelli, Rice, Saliba -- everyone is slightly less appealing without two key teammates. Factor this into your expected points calculations.
- Sporting CP assets rise. Trincao, Pedro Goncalves, and even Sporting defenders become more attractive. A weakened Arsenal side away from home is a different proposition entirely.
What Should You Do?
If you own Saka
Sell immediately. He is confirmed out. A guaranteed 0-pointer at any ownership level is not worth holding. Reinvest the £9.5m elsewhere.
Best replacements from Day 1 fixtures (Tuesday):
- Vinicius Junior (£10.5m, Real Madrid) -- The premium replacement. Real Madrid vs Bayern is a high-scoring fixture on paper.
- Martin Odegaard (£8.5m, Arsenal) -- If you still want Arsenal attacking coverage, Odegaard becomes the focal point without Saka.
- Leandro Trossard (£6.9m, Arsenal) -- The budget differential. Starting in Saka's position at 1% ownership.
- Francisco Trincao (£7.0m, Sporting) -- Sporting's talisman, now facing a weakened Arsenal side at home.
If you own Gabriel
If Gabriel is confirmed out, replacement options:
- William Saliba (£5.9m, Arsenal) -- Starts regardless. Still gives you Arsenal defensive coverage.
- Riccardo Calafiori (£4.6m, Arsenal) -- Nailed on at left-back. Cheaper entry into Arsenal's defence.
- David Hancko (£4.5m, Sporting) -- Budget pick facing a Saka-less Arsenal attack.
The Bigger Picture
Arsenal without Saka and potentially without Gabriel is still a strong side. Arteta's system does not rely on individual brilliance the way some teams do. But in UCL Fantasy terms, the value calculation has shifted.
The smart move is to reduce Arsenal exposure slightly, pick up Trossard as a differential if you are feeling bold, and keep a close eye on Gabriel's status right up to the deadline.
Lineups drop around 7pm BST on Tuesday. Make your final calls then.
